Richard Hounslow is a World Champion canoeist and Olympic silver medalist who has enjoyed a remarkable career in sports. Holding 20 medals across World and European Championships, and the Olympics, he has inspired generations to compete at the top-level in canoeing throughout an illustrious 10 year professional career. Alongside teammate David Florence, Richard twice won silver in the C2 at both the London 2012 Olympic Games and the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Together they took the sport by storm and steered the first British boat to a C2 World title at the 2013 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships in Prague.
Able to speak on what it means to have won silver as part of Team GB at London 2012; Britain's most successful Olympic Games, as well as the success achieved due to years of hard work and sacrifice, Richard details the mental strength, focus and discipline required to reach peak performance in canoeing. Fighting setbacks and injury, Richard overcame missing out on Beijing 2008 to create a legacy that would stand the test of time. Today he details the "special" atmosphere of London 2012 and paints a picture of the magic that the Games brought with it. He talks about that moment when British gold medal winners, Tim Baillie and Etienne Stott, as well as David Florence and himself jumped into the Lee Valley water to celebrate their astonishing victory in front of 12,000 spectators and a lively British contingent.
Richard discusses his significant success in both K1 and C2 team events, and his impressive medal haul, alongside the importance of teamwork, leadership and training. He talks about life after competing and what it was like to be considered one of the best in the world. A regular on British Canoeing TV, Hounslow has also spoken to The Evening Standard, Planet Canoe, ITV News, Harrow College, The Independent, The Telegraph and more. He has proven a popular after dinner speaker over the years, entertaining audiences with his inspirational story, told with passion, packed with advice and laced with a sense of humour. Ideal as the motivational speaker for schools, universities, businesses and charities, Richard's journey is a must-follow.
