Paul Azinger is an accomplished American professional golfer who has won 12 times on the PGA Tour, a title at the 1993 PGA Major Championship and spent almost 300 weeks inside the top 10 of the Official World Golf Ranking. Playing golf since the age of 5, Paul turned professional in 1981 and made his first breakout in 1987 when he won three times on the PGA Tour and placed second at the Open Championship. Winning 11 tournaments on the PGA Tour in the space of six years, he moved into the top 10 of the Official World Golf Ranking, where he stayed for almost 300 weeks. Paul also won a major title at the 1993 PGA Championship at Inverness. Following a diagnosis of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, he began his broadcasting career as an on-course reporter for NBC. Returning to the PGA Tour, he won his first tournament in seven seasons at the Sony Open in Hawaii. Leading his team to victory, Paul was the US captain for the 2008 Ryder Cup before making his Champions Tour debut in 2010. Turning his focus to broadcasting, he worked as lead analyst for ESPN and ABC Sports’ golf coverage. After a short stint at Fox Sports, Paul returned to NBC Sports as their lead golf analyst.
Recognised for his success in sport, Paul received the PGA Player of the Year award in 1987 and PGA Tour Comeback Player of the Year in 2000. He was also the recipient of the GWAA Ben Hogan Award, recognising his commitment to staying active in golf despite illness. Paul published the book ‘Zinger’ in 1995 about his battle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma and co-authored ‘Cracking the Code’ in 2010, sharing his strategies from captaining the US national team in 2008. His legacy in golf was celebrated with the Payne Stewart Award in 2025.
