General Sir Patrick Sanders

General Sir Patrick Sanders is a military leader, globally recognised for his exceptional strategic acumen and operational expertise. With a career spanning four decades, he is celebrated for leading the British Army during critical moments, such as UK's response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, during his tenure as Chief of the General Staff. 

Patrick’s military journey began when he was commissioned into the Royal Green Jackets in 1986 after training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. He demonstrated exemplary leadership during tours in Northern Ireland, Kosovo, Bosnia, and Iraq. Early in his career, he served as Chief of Staff of the 1st Mechanised Brigade before commanding the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Green Jackets, leading them through the transformation into the 4th Battalion The Rifles during the Iraq War. His leadership during the siege of UK bases in Basra in 2007 earned him the Distinguished Service Order (DSO). He later commanded the 20th Armoured Brigade, deploying to Afghanistan under Task Force Helmand in 2011.

Over the years, Patrick held a series of pivotal roles. As Commander of the 3rd (United Kingdom) Division, he ensured readiness for global operations. Promoted to Lieutenant General, he became Commander Field Army and subsequently took the helm at Strategic Command, where he integrated cyber, intelligence, and space capabilities. His tenure saw the creation of the UK’s National Cyber Force and Defence AI Centre. Recognised for his contributions, he was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) in 2020 and awarded the Commander of the Legion of Merit by the United States in 2024.
