Captain Anthony Harris began his training at Sandhurst in September 2001, just two days before the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York. Eleven months later, in August 2002, he was commissioned into The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. A pre-eminent motivational speaker, Captain Harris has experienced some of the most dangerous environments in the world. At first based in Belfast, Captain Harris was deployed for two tours before being sent to Basra in April 2005 during a time of heightened unrest. Whilst deployed in 2009 with the 2 Rifles in Sangin, Helmand Province, Afghanistan, Anthony's vehicle drove over an IED. Such was the force of the blast that both of his feet were shattered and he was thrown twenty metres away from the vehicle.
After endless surgical procedures for 10 months, Anthony decided to have his left leg amputated below the knee. With retirement from the army, new opportunities began to arise and Anthony concentrated all of his time and energy setting up a unique motor racing team called Race2Recovery. As an after dinner speaker, Anthony discusses the motives behind doing so, giving injured soldiers respite from their recovery and the trauma of war. Their exceptional work has led them to strive to complete the most hostile endurance Motorsport event in the world - The Dakar Rally in January 2013. Their efforts were documented in the popular BBC motoring show TopGear, in July 2011. To date, the team have raised over £115,000 for Help for Heroes and the Tedworth House Concept.
Anthony's achievements do not stop here. He established the now nationally recognised Row2Recovery which raised over £1million for Help for Heroes after 6 severely injured servicemen rowed across the Atlantic in January 2012. His incredible feats of overcoming adversity come across wonderfully as an after dinner speaker, intriguing guests with the amazing achievement he and his team mates delivered despite their injuries. Anthony's heartwarming story as a motivational speaker of overcoming adversity will inspire audiences whilst his enthusiasm to succeed and gain the best from people will initiate others to follow his lead.
