Paddy Lowe is one of the greatest engineers and technical directors in Formula 1 history who has helped teams to win a staggering 12 World Championships and 158 Grand Prix throughout his time working with McLaren, Williams and Mercedes. Having stepped away from the fast-paced world of Formula 1 in 2019, Paddy has since founded Zero Petroleum, a company leading the way in developing carbon-neutral fuel made from just air and water.
Having gained a MA in Engineering from the University of Cambridge in 1984, Paddy began his stellar career in Formula 1 as a Control Engineer for Williams before joining the McLaren racing team for an astounding 20 years first starting out as the Head of Research & Development. He then became the Chief Engineer of Systems Development, spending four years in this position before becoming the Engineering Director and then the Technical Director. He then left to join Mercedes-AMG as their Executive Technical Director. He was the brain behind the incredible run of World Championships which both Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg won between 2014 and 2017. His work undoubtedly had an incredible impact on the subsequent titles the team would win with Lewis Hamilton until 2020. In 2017 Paddy would then rejoin Williams as their Chief Technical Officer before leaving the Formula 1 circuit in 2019.
Outside of Formula 1, Paddy became a Consultant for PALAD Technology and founded the UK’s first synthetic fuel company, Zero Petroleum, a company which is dedicated to helping the world in its current climate crisis. Zero has the vision to become the world leader in creating a carbon-neutral fuel which is compatible with any engine, designed for the earth’s ecosystem and gives the same power performance as regular fuel. As one of the most successful engineers in Formula 1 history, Paddy was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge and is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.
Adding to his accolades, Paddy also won the Sir Jackie Stewart Trophy and won the Technical Director of the Year Award twice. With one of the most innovative engineering minds in the world, his designs have won the Car of the Year Award 10 times. As one of the most innovative engineers in Formula 1, Paddy Lowe’s expertise and inside knowledge of Formula 1 make him the perfect speaker for high-performance engineering, sustainability, and innovation speaking events.
