Dr Mohamed El-Erian is one of the leading voices on the economy, inflation and investment who currently holds numerous prestigious positions in various companies. As an internationally renowned economist and businessman, he has previously used his expertise to advise none other than the former President of the United States of America, Barack Obama, as the Chair of Obama’s Global Development Council from 2012-2017. When hired as a speaker, Mohamed uses his worldly experience to advise organisations on the global economy and international markets.
Born in New York, USA to Egyptian parents, Mohamed spent many of his younger years living in various different countries all over the globe. He attained a scholarship to Queens’ College, Cambridge where he earned his BA in Economics. He then went to St Antony’s College, Oxford where he earned his master’s and doctorate in Economics. Between 1983 and 1997, Mohamed held various positions at the International Monetary Fund including Deputy Director. He then became the European Head of Emerging Markets for Salomon Smith Barney, the Managing Director and Portfolio Manager before then being promoted to CEO and Co-CIO, and held the position of President and CEO for Harvard Management Company.
Now a go-to voice for companies all over the world regarding the complex issues of the global economy, Mohamed is the Chair of the Investment Advisory Committee for Microsoft, Chief Economic Advisor to the Management Board for the Allianz Group, Senior Advisor for Gramercy Funds Management LLC, Advisor of the International Advisory Group for GIC. He is the President of Queen’s College for his former University, Cambridge, is the Senior Global Fellow for the University of Pennsylvania and is Rene M Kern Professor of Practice for the Wharton School, Philadelphia – showing his dedication to educating the next generation on the future of the global economy. In recognition of his unmatched knowledge in economics, Mohamed was awarded the Foreign Policy’s Top 100 Global Thinkers for four years in a row and was voted as one of the 100 Most Powerful People in Finance three years in a row.
Mohamed has gained a stellar reputation as a writer, not only a contributing editor to the Financial Times since 2014 and a columnist for Bloomberg since 2014, Mohamed’s book ‘When Markets Collide’ won numerous awards including Financial Times Business Book of the Year 2008 and was named Book of the Year by The Economist.
