Michael Watson is a world famous boxing speaker, sports personality and a motivational icon who is known more for his extraordinary post-boxing life than his professional career. Having experienced the dangers of the sport, Watson has since become a prolific speaker and disabled sports activist. Prior to beginning his professional career, Watson had already made waves as a youth in the under 71 kg division with a London Schools Title and National Champions Title.
In a professional career that lasted only lasted seven years, Watson achieved an impressive 25 wins from 30 fights, with 85% of matches won by knockout. Most notably, he obtained the British Commonwealth Middleweight Title in 1989 and challenged for a world title on three occasions. Attempting a world title lead Watson to cross paths with the famed Chris Eubank, where the 1991 match ended in defeat for Watson.
Set on reaching his goal, Watson rechallenged Eubank later that year in a rematch that would prove to be near fateful. An unexpected swift uppercut caused Watson to fall back, hitting his head on the ropes and requiring urgent medical attention. Remaining in the ring without assistance for nearly eight minutes lead to an irreversible brain injury. After months in a coma and an inability to walk, speak or hear Watson went on to spend the next few years in a wheelchair.
Determined to overcome the hurdle, Michael Watson undertook years of intense mental and physical therapy in a bid for recovery. Making headlines in 2003, the inspiration completed the London Marathon with Chris Eubank by his side. Walking for two hours every morning, Watson reached the finish line in six days. In recognition of his incredible resilience and bravery, the Queen awarded Watson an MBE in addition to him being named as a torchbearer for the London 2012 Olympic Games. With a wealth of moving and genuine personal experiences to share about his recovery, Michael Watson is unlike any other boxing speaker currently working on the sports speaker circuit. A strength of character that has grounded Watson throughout his career and recover is evident in his motivational speeches as the humble boxer provides a fascinating talk for all in attendance.
