Laura Deas is an Olympic bronze medallist and the only Welsh woman to win a Winter Olympic medal. Since retiring from the sport in 2025, she is now a broadcaster for the Winter Games, working with the BBC and Olympic Broadcasting Services. Drawing from her experience at the pinnacle of winter sports, Laura is an inspiring motivational speaker who speaks confidently about performing under pressure.
Passionate about sports from a young age, Laura played netball, hockey and professionally competed in equestrian sports before being scouted by UK Sport’s Girls4Gold talent identification programme in 2009, starting skeleton training at the University of Bath. A year later, she was selected for the UK national skeleton team and won her first Europe Cup race in Germany. Continuing her success, she made her debut in the World Championships in the 2014-15 season, finishing fifth overall. In the opening race of the following season, Laura achieved her first World Cup victory. With consistent top 10 finishes, she was selected for the Olympic team for the first time in 2018, winning a bronze medal at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, becoming the first Welsh woman to win a Winter Olympic medal. She also competed for Team GB at the Winter Olympics in Beijing. After taking silver at her last international event, the 2023 World Championships in St. Moritz, Laura officially announced her retirement from skeleton in 2025.
Recognising her impact in winter sports, Laura received an honorary Master of Science from the University of Chester and was recently inducted into the Welsh Sports Hall of Fame. Transitioning into sports media, she was a commentator at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Games with the Olympic Broadcasting Services.
Speaking on managing fear, overcoming setbacks and achieving success, Laura is an experienced speaker, visiting both workplaces and schools to share insights from her impressive sporting career. She is also active in the charity sector, serving as a Trustee for The Bobsleigh Skeleton and Ice Sports Foundation and is a mentor for young people, supporting their personal development.
