José De Gregorio, a Full Professor and Dean of the School of Economics and Business at Universidad de Chile is also a nonresident senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, a member of the board and financial advisor at numerous private institutions, and a consultant for various international financial organisations.
With regards to his career, José De Gregorio has held numerous positions in the economic sector. He worked as an economist in the International Monetary Fund’s research department, after which he became the Coordinator of Economic Policy at the Ministry of Finance. He held this position for a period of three years, before accepting the position of professor and head of post-graduate programs at the Center of Applied Economics at the University of Chile. In 2000 and 2001, however, José De Gregorio served his country in the capacity of Minister of Economy, Mining and Energy, before joining the Central bank of Chile. He was a board member during 2001 but became the institution’s Vice-President in 2003. He went on to be appointed the bank’s President in 2007, a position he occupied until 2011, before going back to academia.
José De Gregorio has, throughout his professional life, been the recipient of numerous awards and accolades. Amongst these he counts the “Central Banker of the Year in Latin America for 2008,” which was awarded hi by The Banker, a member of the Financial Times editorial group, been named “Distinguished Industrial Engineer of 2007” by the Industrial Engineering-Universidad de Chile Alumni Association, and also been named the “Economist of the year” by El Mercurio in 2011.
Besides being regarded as one of Latin America’s top academics in various publications, José De Gregorio is also the author and co-author of various books and papers pertaining to the world economy in general, and Latin America in particular.
With regards to educational background, José De Gregorio has a degree in civil engineering and a master’s degree in engineering. Both these were obtained from the University of Chile. He was also the recipient of the “Marcos Orrego Puelma” award for the best graduate of his generation. From there, José De Gregorio went on to obtain his Ph.D. in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of technology, commonly referred to as MIT, in 1990.
