Jock Clear

Jock Clear is an infamous race engineer in the F1 industry, who has worked with some of the biggest names, from Lewis Hamilton to Michael Schumacher. Working in F1 engineering for over 20 years and contributing to the peak performance of Ferrari for over a decade, Jock is a clinical, detail-oriented individual who delivers success. Currently serving as the driver coach for Ferrari, Jock works closely with leading F1 driver Charles Leclerc to maximise efficiency and technique. Graduating from the prestigious Heriot- Watt University, Edinburgh with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1987, Jock discovered his passion for motorsports whilst racing alongside his friends. He joined Lola Cars in 1988 as a Design Engineer, working alongside Larrousse F1 designer, Chris Murphy. Developing his craft, he soon became an expert in both CAD and CAM techniques.  In 1989, Jock joined Benetton Formula as their Head of Composite Design, leaving in 1992 to become a Senior Designer at Leyton House Racing. Jock’s first experience working with drivers came in 1994 when he joined Team Lotus as Johnny Herbert’s Race Engineer. In the coming years, Jock would work with David Coulthard, guiding him to his first Grand Prix in Portugal and lead Jacques Villeneuve to his 1997  Canadian Drivers' Championship victory. In 2003, Jock worked with Takuma Sato, helping him achieve multiple top-six finishes, securing BAR's second-place position in the constructors' championship.  

In 2006, Jock became race engineer for Rubens Barrichello, a role that would come with a European Grand Prix victory in Valencia and an Italian Grand Prix win at Monza, ultimately achieving a third-place position in the drivers' championship. For his continued success in F1 engineering roles, Jock was awarded a Doctor of Engineering by Heriot-Watt University in 2007. By 2010, Jock was a race engineer for Nico Rosberg at Mercedes, and in 2012, he transitioned to performance engineer for Michael Schumacher.  During 2013, Jock worked with Lewis Hamilton, where the team's rigorous data analysis put Mercedes at the front of the pack and secured them a 2014 Drivers' Championship title. Following his success at Mercedes, Ferrari recruited Jock in 2014 as their Senior Performance Engineer. In 2019, he began working with Charles Leclerc. With targeted feedback and intense mental preparation, Leclerc won the 2022 Australian Grand Prix. In 2025, it was announced that Jock would leave his roles at Ferrari at the end of the season.
