Jean Spies is a South African track cyclist who has competed in two Olympic games in the sprint and keirin events. Holder of many African Championship titles, Jean knows what it takes to thrive in elite sport. His journey has not been without it’s hurdles, from overcoming injury and challenges with funding, Jean is a testament to the grit and determination it takes to succeed.
Jean began cycling at a young age, inspired by his father he first picked up a bike at age six and was an avid mountain biker and road cyclist. However, after a discarded track bike came into his possession it set him on a new path and he began training at the Turffontein track in Johannesburg. Jean’s dedication led him to make his international debut in 2016 when he competed in the men’s scratch event at the 2016 UCI track Cycling World Championships. He went on to represent South Africa at the 2020 and 2024 Summer Olympics in the sprint and keirin events.
Unrelentingly determined, Jean’s journey has not been without it’s obstacles. With no reliable funding from his national federation, Jean has faced the challenge of funding his training and travel himself. His commitment to cycling and competition has meant he has had to sleep in barns, caravans and even under velodrome seating to compete at international events. His drive and passion for the sport has seen him achieve numerous African Championship titles, and Jean is currently in the process of qualifying for the Commonwealth Games in 2026.
