Iain Stewart

Televisions leading authority on geology and sustainability, Iain Stewart is one of the most revered presenters in his field. Known for his regular appearances as an expert on the small screen, Stewart is also actively involved in a number of high profile societies and groups that work towards a more sustainable planet, as well as being a resident lecturer at the University of Plymouth. For twenty years, Iain Stewart has worked alongside the BBC to produce a number of groundbreaking documentaries on essential topics like global warming, natural disasters and sustainability. From his first works with the broadcasting giant in 2002 as an academic on ‘Helike - The Real Atlantis’ to some of his later contributions to projects such as ‘How to Grow a Planet’ and ‘Planet Oil’ Stewart’s expertise is unrivalled. In 2007 his documentary series for the BBC titled ‘Earth: The Power of the Planet’ gripped viewers and was nominated for a BAFTA.

Although Stewart had an interest in television and acting in his youth, he decided to pursue a degree in geography and geology at Strathclyde University, which he achieved top grades in, and later gained a specialist doctorate in. For over a decade Stewart lectured at a number of universities in London and inspired the next generation with his passion for the planet and motivated them to action to prevent damage. Proving his dominance in the field, Stewart’s earlier interest in the small screen came to the forefront as he began his broadcasting career, pairing it with his geographical experience.

Currently, Iain Stewart is the Professor of Geoscience Communication at Plymouth University, a position unique from any other educational institute, that allows him to enrich students’ studies with his unrivalled expertise. Additionally, he is the UNESCO Chair, responsible for the research and progressive contributions to geoscience and society. Having devoted his career to the industry, Stewart has been recognised for his achievements with a Geologists’ Association Lifetime Membership, an MBE from the Queen and Medal of Merit from the European Federation of Geoscience.
