The Queen of Latin Pop, Gloria Estefan is a renowned Cuban-American singer, actress and businesswoman who has amassed 38 number-one hits and seven Grammy Awards. With 75 million worldwide sales, it is no surprise that Gloria is considered one of the best-selling female singers of all time. Possessing the sensational vocals of a contralto, Gloria is credited with breaking down the barriers for Latin artists such as Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, and Ricky Martin among others.
Born in Havana Cuba in 1957, Gloria moved to Miami with her parents at a young age. It was during her time at the University of Miami that she began to sing with the Miami Latin Boys. Within a short period, the group found worldwide success and is well known for their hit single Conga, which also became Gloria’s signature song. The same song led the group to win the 15th annual Tokyo Musical Festival in 1986. They produced another hit single in 1988 for Anything For You which reached number one on the charts.
Gloria experienced a life-threatening accident after her cervical vertebrae fractured on her way back from a meeting with President Bush. Her tour bus was involved in an accident during snow conditions which led to Gloria having multiple surgeries and over a year of intensive rehabilitation to recover. She made a full recovery and launched a worldwide comeback tour and album Into the Light, which reached number five on the US Billboard 200. Gloria is also known for her 1993 Spanish album Mi Tierra, which won a Grammy Award and rose to the top of the Billboard Top Latin Album Chart. The album also achieved the first Diamond album in Spain.
For her distinguished musical talent, Gloria has been named one of the Top 100 Greatest Artists of all time by Billboard and VH1. She has been honoured with the American Music Award for Lifetime Achievement and was inducted into the Songwriter Hall of Fame. Furthermore, she was the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Kennedy Centre Honours. Outside her extraordinary music career, Gloria is a successful businesswoman with several ventures including in the hospitality industry.
