Former Chelsea and Queens Park Rangers player Gavin Peacock is a football speaker and Christian minister currently located in Calgary, Canada. Known for his career as a striker and as a BBC sports speaker Peacock played professional football throughout the 80’s and 90’s. Gavin began his playing career at the esteemed Queens Park Rangers Football club, making a total of 17 appearances in First Division football. In 1987 Gavin moved to Gillingham football, a move that was started by his father who was the manager of the team at the time.
Two years later in 1989 Harry Redknapp signed Gavin to Bournemouth for a £250,000 deal, however Gavin only stayed with the team until 1990 and was then signed to Newcastle United for £275,000. Whilst with the team Gavin helped them to win the Division One title during the 1992-93 season and was also Newcastle’s top scorer from 1991-92. Gavin was then sold to Chelsea for an impressive £1.5 million. With Chelsea Gavin scored at both home and away games for the team, most prominently in the 1-0 victories over Manchester United during the 1993-94 season.
Additionally, Gavin helped the team reach both the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1995 and the FA Cup semi-finals during 1996. After playing for Chelsea Gavin made a return to Queen Park Rangers, as well as a short stint playing for Charlton Athletic on loan. At the end of the 2001/02 season Gavin retired from playing football, having made 557 League appearances throughout his career. Peacock retired as a player after almost twenty years on the pitch and began a career as a football speaker and pundit for the BBC.
During his broadcasting career Peacock appeared on Football Focus, Score and Match of the Day 2 as well as working as a sports speaker for Radio 5 Live. During this period Gavin also began working as an after dinner speaker, focusing on the intersection between religious belief and football. He has notably presented an episode of Songs of Praise as well as being in a BBC special on the subject. In 2008 Gavin Peacock, having achieved a Theology degree from Ridley Hall, Cambridge Gavin relocated to Canada whereupon he embarked on a three years Masters at the Ambrose Seminary. Peacock continues to work as an after dinner speaker as well as acting as an Elder and Pastor at Calvary Grace Church in Calgary.
