Dr. Arthur Brooks, known as the happiness professor, is the #1 New York Times best-selling author of 15 books, including “The Happiness Files”, and an inspirational keynote speaker. Being the creator of the “How to Build a Life” column at The Atlantic, he blends research-based science with lived experiences and deep human connections to teach audiences how to flourish throughout their life as their ambitions adapt. As a professor at Harvard Business School, he extends his research to students, executives and the public through courses, writing and media.
Arthur began his career at 19 years old when he left college to pursue his dream of becoming a professional French Horn player. Whilst performing on stages across Europe, he returned to school via distance learning to gain a bachelor’s degree in economics. Furthermore, Arthur developed his academic knowledge by earning an M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Public Policy Analysis from the RAND Graduate School. During this time, he worked as an Analyst for the Rand Corporation’s Project Air Force. Arthur then began teaching as a University Professor primarily at Syracuse University. In 2009, he became the President of the American Enterprise Institute, a company known as one of the world’s most influential think tanks.
In 2014, he became a Contributing Opinion Writer for the New York Times, followed by becoming a columnist at the Washington Post. Currently, Arthur works as a Parker Gilbert Montgomery Professor of the Practice of Public and Nonprofit Leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School and Professor of Management Practice at the Harvard Business School. Alongside teaching, Arthur is the author of 15 award-winning books, such as “From Strength to Strength” and “Build the Life You Want”, which both became #1 on the New York Times best-seller list.
After publishing 60 peer-reviewed articles and various books, Dr. Arthur Brooks' inspirational contributions have not gone unnoticed, with him being named among Fortune Magazine's “50 World’s Greatest Leaders” along with receiving the Irving Kristol Award in 2022 and seven honorary doctorates. He shares his belief that true happiness centres on creating warm, positive relationships and living all aspects of life with meaning. His keynotes, such as his TEDx talk, “The Art and Science of Happiness”, work to raise well-being and leave audiences with transformations that stay with them.
