Andrew Mehrtens was inducted in the RugbyPass Hall of Fame in 2021 owing to his incredible career as a professional rugby player since the 1990s. Having played for the New Zealand National Rugby Union (All Blacks) team in the Rugby World Cup, Andrew has been representing his country since playing for the New Zealand Under 19 National team game against Australia in 1992. Now available to hire as a public speaker, Andrew speaks on his rugby career, high performance and sports.
One of the best five-eights, Andrew played for Canterbury between 1993 and 2005, during which he was an integral part of the 3 NPC-winning Canterbury squads. In his tenure, he made 108 appearances and won over 1000 points for Canterbury. Also competing in Super Rugby since its inception in 1996, Andrew played for the Crusaders. Over the 9 years that he played for the team, Andrew held the record for the most points by any player in the competition. After representing the All Blacks in over 70 appearances Andrew earned his last cap for New Zealand in 2004. In 2005, he was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his contributions to rugby.
Playing internationally from 2005, Andrew played for England’s Harlequins, the French Toulons, Racing Metro 92, and Beziers. Andrew earned more and more recognition with each team he played for, and he came to be known as the ‘promotion specialist’. Having retired in 2013, Andrew dabbled in coaching teams such as the Waratahs. Since 2021, he has been a Commentator for Stan Sports. Andrew was also inducted into the RugbyPass Hall of Fame in 2021 – a matter of great honour.
