Dennis Taylor is arguably one of the biggest legends in snooker and has built a phenomenal legacy. A truly inspiring figure, Taylor was a professional snooker player for 28 years. He made an astonishing £1,426,294 in career earnings which is a substantial figure in snooker. Now a regular on the motivational speaker circuit, Taylor inspires his audiences sharing his extensive experience, and in particular focusing on handling pressure and the importance of drive and determination.
Taylor’s career started in 1972 and he made an impact immediately; his rhythmic style of play and legendary glasses meant he was an instant fan favourite. Taylor went close to winning the World Snooker Championships in 1975 and 1977 but was knocked out at the semi-final stage. His first World Championship final came in 1979 when he lost to Terry Griffiths. Taylor won his first ranking event at the Rothmans Grand Prix in 1984, winning the match emphatically by 10 frames to 2.
Taylor was involved in arguably the greatest ever World Snooker Championship final when he met the then favourite, Steve Davis. The final became known as ‘the black ball final’ and is the only ever world championship final to go down to the final, respotted black. Taylor trailed 8-0, 9-7 and 17-15 before pegging Davis back to 17-17 and force a final frame decider. Davis only needed the brown to win, but Taylor got his opportunity and showed nerves of steel as he potted all of the remaining balls to force the respotted black.
Taylor eventually won the frame and with it his first-ever World Championship. Despite entering the early hours of the morning, the match still drew over 18 million viewers of the BBC’s live coverage of the event.
During his career, Taylor won 2 ranking events and 17 non-ranking events, peaking at number 2 in the world. He will forever be remembered as one of the biggest legends of the game. Known for his wonderful personality and a great sense of humour, Taylor now speaks at events up and down the country. As one of the most sought after snooker speakers on the circuit, Taylor often discusses his career and that memorable final in 1985. He also discusses topics such as peak performance, handling pressure and the importance of drive and determination.
