Shaun Murphy, 2005 World Snooker Champion, is a professional sportsman who tours the world competing in the World Snooker Tour. Having turned professional in 1998, Shaun was the youngest ever professional at the time and won the World Snooker Newcomer of the Year award in 2000. Renowned for his down-to-earth character and ability to connect to any audience, Shaun is also a highly sought-after after dinner and motivational speaker. When he’s not competing on tour, Shaun dedicates much of his time to charity fundraising for different charities including RMCH ( Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital ), celebrity appearances and media work as a full-time pundit for BBC’s Snooker coverage. When looking for a talented snooker player to share the successes of their career and the skills they have mastered in elite sport, don't hesitate to hire Shaun Murphy today!
Shaun started playing Snooker in 1990 as an eight-year-old, a complete accident after Santa delivered a Steve Davis branded 5ft Snooker table instead of a Commodore 64 computer. But that was it, the Snooker bug had definitely bitten. By the age of ten, Shaun had made his first century break and by the time he reached 15, he had won every junior tournament the game had to offer. Shaun’s first victory as a professional came when he won the 2000 Benson & Hedges Championship earning him a place at the legendary Wembley Conference Centre to play in The Masters. Two years later in 2002, Shaun made his debut at the Embassy World Championship at The Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. At just 22 years of age, the 150/1 outsider stormed to victory in the 2005 World Snooker Championship to become the second youngest winner of all time and the last-ever Embassy Champion.
Since then, Shaun - nicknamed “The Magician" has remained an ever-present in the world's elite top 16 and has gone on to become one of only 11 players to win all three of Snookers majors known as the “Triple Crown" - The World Championship, The Masters and the UK Championship. To date, Shaun has won 25 professional events around the world and is one of only three players to have completed the "ITV Slam" winning the World Grand Prix, the Players Championship, the Tour Championship and the Champion of Champions. In 2024, Shaun was awarded “Magical Moment of the Year 2024” by WST for making the first-ever 147 at The Shootout, a feat many said would be impossible. He’s also the only person on the planet to have completed sports holy grail - a Hole in One, a Nine dart finish and a 147. A passionate golfer currently playing off scratch and a keen pianist, Shaun is a truly versatile sportsman and the ideal addition to almost any event. Shaun joined the BBC team in 2021 and has gone on to become a key member of the Commentary and Punditry team. In 2017 he helped form WPBSA Players, working with WPBSA and WST to aid and represent professional players and is now Chairman.
Inspired by the greats of the game that have gone before him, Shaun’s work as an after dinner speaker is not only full of entertaining stories from over 25 years on tour, but also an honest insight into his own personal experiences. Having left school at the age of 13 to nine years later conquering the Snooker world, Shaun’s story is not one to be missed. When looking to hire a speaker whose successful snooker career and motivational insights will promise an inspiring and engaging event experience, don't hesitate to hire Shaun Murphy!
