Lauren Rowles

Paralympic Gold Medallist

To give you a very brief bit of background, Lauren’s story is pretty remarkable.  When Lauren was 13, having gone to bed the previous night completely able bodied, she woke one morning paralysed from the waist down. She was later diagnosed with the rare neurological disease Transverse Myelitis.

Lauren is now 18 and only started rowing last year,  she was previously a wheelchair athlete and represented England at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow – the youngest member of Team England’s athletic squad.  Lauren was talent scouted by the GB Rowing Team in early 2015. Five months after taking her first stroke she was selected to represent Great Britain at the World Championships, where, alongside her rowing partner Laurence Whiteley, she picked up a silver medal, being only half a second off the Gold.

Within just a year of rowing, Lauren earned herself a coveted spot on the GB Rio 2016 Paralympic Games Team.  In their heat Lauren and Laurence re-set the record books, setting a new World Record in their event, also setting a new Paralympic Record in the process. On the 11th September 2016 Lauren and Laurence won Gold to become the new Paralympic Champions.

Lauren has some great experience with public speaking and offers a unique and refreshing insight into her journey and sporting career. Lauren is incredibly versatile and will tailor her talks to the client’s needs. Previously Lauren has done talks based around motivation, achieving your dreams and goals, teamwork, leadership and how to deal with the strains and joys of success.

She’s also done talks at schools, aimed at young people and motivating them to do sport and achieve their dreams. < In the run up to Rio Lauren was selected as the Paralympic athlete to front a campaign with Steve Redgrave. She is an ambassador for the UK Sport campaign #discoveryourgold. Lauren has been shortlisted for the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year 2016 and has also been awarded an MBE for achievements in the 2017 New Year’s Honours list.
