Former British decathlete Daley Thompson has secured many titles for Britain in his esteemed sporting history. Daley is considered to be one of the greatest decathletes of all time, with four world records, three Commonwealth titles, two Olympic gold medals and victories in the World and European Championships.
Daley’s love for sport began as a member of the Haywards Heath Harriers, later joining the Newham and Essex Beagles Athletics Club in 1975. It was here that Daley began to train as a sprinter, founding his talent for decathlons. After a while training in the sport, Daley was entered into his first-ever decathlon competing in Cwmbran, Wales where he claimed his first victory at competition level.
The next victory for Daley came in 1976 when he won the AAA title and competed at his first Olympics, the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games. This victory was shortly followed by winning the European Junior Title and his first Commonwealth title. At the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games Daley took home another easy win, claiming himself a gold medal. Later at the 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games Daley took home another Commonwealth title, claiming himself another gold medal.
In 1986 Daley won his third and final Commonwealth title, winning another gold medal in the decathlon. After this event, Daley wasn’t able to compete in many more sporting events due to hamstring injury. Olympic sporting was not the only expertise that Daley held. During the 1990s Daley played professional football, playing for Stevenage F.C and Mansfield Town. In addition to that, he also acted as a fitness coach for both Luton Town and Wimbledon Football Clubs.
After his full retirement from sport, Daley can now be found working predominantly as a fitness trainer, alongside holding motivational speeches at corporate events. Daley has also lent his talent to TV, staring on the 2011 show Jaimie’s Dream School. In 2018, Daley took on the business venture of selling protein shakes and bars with Gary Barnshaw.
In 1982 Daley was awarded the title of BBC Sports Personality of the Year 1982. His hard work throughout his career was commended when he was awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours of 1983. Daley was later promoted from his title of MBE to a CBE in the New Year Honours of 2000.
