British rowing Champion and Olympic speaker Alastair Mckean began taking part in the sport in the mid 1990’s whilst still a teenager; however, a serious road traffic accident in 1999 left Mckean physically impaired and with little feeling in his arm and it looked to many as though his sporting days were over.
A strong recovery and sheer hard work on Alastair’s behalf by 2005 he had been invited to join GB’s Adaptive Rowing Team; success as a world Champion, Olympic medallist and sports speaker followed over the next four years raising Alastair’s profile to a global level.
His first high flying win came that very same year in fact when in 2005 he was part of the British World Championship Gold medal winning team. This success continued again in 2006 when he and his team once again went on to take Gold in the World Championships and again the following year when they came home with Silver.
Alastair’s most notable success came in 2008 when he took part in the Beijing Olympics as part of Team GB’s Paralympic Rowing Team winning a bronze medal for his nation. This success helped to launch Alastair’s career as an Olympic speaker his bookings taking him and down the country and bringing him before corporate, private and school age audiences.
Alastair continues to work as an Olympic speaker visiting schools and sports youth centres across the UK promoting the work of the Adaptive Rowing Team as well as highlighting the benefits of healthy and active lifestyles. Outside his work as a sports speaker Alastair is a qualified teacher and works as an instructor at the University of Kent and at the King’s School Canterbury.
