Zita Holbourne FRSA is an award-winning artist, poet, activist, and keynote speaker, renowned for her unwavering dedication to equality, freedom, and social justice. As co-founder and National Chair of Black Activists Rising Against Cuts (BARAC) UK, she has led vital campaigns against racism and austerity, with a focus on protecting the rights of marginalised communities. Zita also holds the position of National Vice President of the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) and serves as Joint National Chair of Artists' Union England, where she champions workplace equality and advocates for the rights of creative professionals.
A passionate advocate for human rights, Zita interweaves her activism with her creative work. As a visual artist and curator, her exhibitions have been showcased at prestigious venues, including the Tate Modern and the V&A, as well as internationally. One of her most notable exhibitions, Roots, Culture, Identity, was created in memory of Stephen Lawrence and is part of her ongoing efforts to challenge racism through art. As Founding Member of Movement Against Xenophobia, she also campaigns for justice for the Windrush generation, using her art to highlight racial injustices and advocate for change.
Zita is a prolific writer and has contributed to over 40 books. Her own publications include 'Striving for Equality, Freedom, and Justice', which blends poetry and political activism, and her latest work, 'Roots and Rebellion: Stories of Resisting Racism and Reclaiming Identity', co-authored in 2024, continues to amplify the voices of those who are often overlooked. Her contributions to both the arts and activism have earned her numerous accolades, such as the Outstanding Global Arts & Culture Award at the Caribbean Global Awards and recognition as an Honorary Fellow of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David.
Zita’s influence extends beyond her artistic career. She is a Trustee of Action for Southern Africa and a member of UNESCO’s Coalition of Artists for the General History of Africa, further cementing her role in advocating for global social justice.
