Winner of the George Orwell Prize for Journalism 2013, Tom Bergin, former oil broker turned Reuters energy industry reporter, wrote best-seller Spills and Spin: The Inside Story OF BP – the impressive and shocking tale of the clever communications used to hide a flawed business model by one of the world’s largest companies.
Born, bred and educated in Dublin, Tom worked as an oil broker and for the Mexican government, had a stint in fund management and eventually became a journalist. In Tom’s capacity as the head of Reuters UK economics team and Mergers and acquisitions coverage, he covered the rise and fall of Enron; the collapse of Arthur Andersen, as well as general political stories; UK Islamic terrorism, and insider dealing scandals.
For over 12 years he reported from all over the world, and has led Reuters coverage of the oil and gas industry in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Tom has also written prolifically about BP disasters including the Texas City explosion, Alaskan pipeline leaks and the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
Tom is also a passionate advocate on the issues surrounding climate change. Tom’s 2011 book was written with a unique insight, and access to key figures involved in the BP disaster. The book has been translated into many languages and has been published in dozens of newspapers around the world. He is a regular guest on international radio and TV, and is a highly respected business keynote speaker on security and risk.
