Terry Butcher is a former captain for the England national team. Having played in three FIFA World Cups over a decade for England, made 445 appearances at club level and managed 10 clubs over 28 years, he is an undisputed football legend. Known for his courageous leadership and playing style, Terry hit the headlines with an iconic image of him with blood spurting through his bandage, across his face and drenching his shirt and body as he played on despite a head injury in England's World Cup qualifier versus Sweden in 1989. The image came to symbolise the pride associated with playing for England.
Interestingly, washing powder company Radon approached him for an advertising campaign on the back of it, and later the NHS would use Lee Dixon to replicate the image for a campaign that said: "Terry Butcher gave blood for the country. You could give blood too". There are many hilarious anecdotes surrounding the image and Terry's illustrious career that make up an incredible after dinner speech. Terry's playing career wielded spells with Ipswich Town where he made his name as a combative and tough central defender, particularly dominant in aerial battles. He became a club legend, making 271 appearances, as well as forming part of that famous side that won the UEFA Cup under Bobby Robson in 1981 before narrowly falling short of a League title.
Soon after he joined Rangers where he was made captain and led the side to three league titles and two Scottish League Cups in four seasons. He made the first of 77 England appearances in 1980 under Ron Greenwood at the age of 21, eventually going onto captain the side during England's run to the 1990 FIFA World Cup semi-final. When he hung up his boots Terry moved into management, starting as a player-manager at Coventry City and Sunderland, before a fairly successful stint at Motherwell a decade later between 2002-05 where fans praised his impact in the face of financial instability.
A crowning moment of his spell came when he led the club to the 2005 Scottish League Cup Final. Terry was installed as the Scotland assistant manager in 2008, before a sixth-place finish at Inverness Caledonian Thistle brought him a place on the shortlist for the PFA Scotland Manager of the Year in 2013. Spells at Hibernian, Newport County and The Philippines came up, alongside regular media appearances as a football pundit for SPL and Europa League coverage on Five and Setanta Sports. He also worked for BBC Sport for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

"I’ve Hosted/MC’d over 120 Lunch/Dinners at the Club and had some really great Sporting Speakers, but I have to say Terry was one of the nicest blokes we have had the pleasure of welcoming to the 1st Central County Ground, Hove. He mixed with all the guests before and after the lunch, signing autographs and posing for photos- nothing was too much trouble for him! I held an interview Q&A with him and then opened it up to questions from the floor. Terry had some great stories around his England, Rangers and Ipswich times as well as Maradona and Gazza. Terry went down a storm with all our Guests and I would highly recommend him. The feedback was first-class." – Tony, Sussex Cricket Club
