Terry Butcher was the former captain of England's national team and played in three FIFA World Cups over a decade. He made 445 appearances at club level and managed 10 clubs over 28 years, making him an undisputed football legend. He recently released an autobiographical ITV documentary, 'Butcher: Invisible Wounds', where he detailed his incredible sporting career. Known for his courageous leadership and fearless playing style, Terry made headlines during England’s 1989 World Cup qualifier against Sweden, playing on despite a head injury. The iconic image of him bloodied and bandaged, his white England shirt soaked in blood, became an enduring symbol of the pride and determination associated with representing his country.
Interestingly, washing powder company Radon approached him for an advertising campaign on the back of it, and later the NHS would use Lee Dixon to replicate the image for a campaign that said: "Terry Butcher gave blood for the country. You could give blood too". There are many hilarious anecdotes surrounding the image and Terry's illustrious career that make up an incredible after-dinner speech. Terry's playing career included time at Ipswich Town, where he made his name as a combative and tough central defender, particularly dominant in aerial battles. He became a club legend, making 271 appearances, as well as forming part of that famous side that won the UEFA Cup under Bobby Robson in 1981 before narrowly falling short of a League title.
Soon after, he joined Rangers, where he was made captain and led the side to three league titles and two Scottish League Cups in four seasons. He made the first of 77 England appearances in 1980 under Ron Greenwood at the age of 21, eventually going on to captain the side during England's run to the 1990 FIFA World Cup semi-final. When he hung up his boots, Terry moved into management, starting as a player-manager at Coventry City and Sunderland, before a fairly successful stint at Motherwell a decade later, between 2002-05 where fans praised his impact in the face of financial instability.
A crowning moment of his spell came when he led the club to the 2005 Scottish League Cup Final. Terry was installed as the Scotland assistant manager in 2008, before a sixth-place finish at Inverness Caledonian Thistle brought him a place on the shortlist for the PFA Scotland Manager of the Year in 2013. Spells at Hibernian, Newport County and the Philippines came up, alongside regular media appearances as a football pundit for SPL and Europa League coverage on Five and Setanta Sports. He also worked for BBC Sport for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
