Member of the House of Lords, Baroness Susan Greenfield, is a highly celebrated broadcaster, writer and scientist. Susan's dedicated research into Parkinson's and Alzheimer’s disease has drastically improved the lives of thousands of people, as she invests her career into a cure. In her after-dinner speaker, Susan features as a resident expert in neurology and consciousness, sharing her research with captivated audiences. After achieving qualifications in Latin, Greek, ancient history and maths from the Godolphin and Latymer School, Susan became one of the first of her family to attend university.
Susan studied at St Hilda's College, The University of Oxford, where she graduated with a first-class degree in Experimental Psychology. In 1977, she completed a DPhil degree in the origins of acetylcholinesterase in cerebrospinal fluid, before carrying out a junior research fellowship at Green College, from 1981 to 1984.
Susan’s science and psychology focused profession has led her to a number of groundbreaking findings. Over the course of her career, she has published over 200 papers, most notably, on the basic brain mechanisms involved in addictive personalities, as well as disorders like ADHD. Susan was the first woman to give the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures in 1994 when she gave a lecture named Journey to the centre of the brain. Following this, she was titled Director of the Royal Institution four years later, in 1998. In 2013, after a highly influential decade of research, Susan co-founded Neuro-bio Ltd, a biotech company that developed diagnostic tests and therapeutics for Alzheimer's disease.
Through her study, she found that a key enzyme can kill neurons and that neuronal death could be prevented by cyclic peptide analogue. As a political influence, Susan is a crossbencher in the House of Lords, where she highlights issues surrounding drugs, education and economic equality. This award-winning speaker is a popular choice at industry events and business conferences up and down the country, due to her invaluable knowledge. An event featuring Susan is privileged to one of the sharpest brains in the country; if her 32 honorary degrees aren’t enough then her award for the Royal Society's Michael Faraday Prize sums up her brilliance.
