
Steven Levitt is a renowned economist, best-selling author, and professor at the University of Chicago. He is the co-author of the New York Times bestseller ‘Freakonomics’, which has sold more than 5 million copies worldwide. He is currently the William B. Ogden Distinguished Service Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago, where he directs the Becker Centre on Chicago Price Theory and is the co-founder of the Radical Innovation for Social Change (RISC) Centre.
Achieving a BA from Harvard University, Steven worked as a management consultant at Corporate Decisions, where he advised Fortune 500 companies. He earned his PhD in economics from MIT before teaching at the University of Chicago, which he has done since 1997. He is also an Affiliated Research Professor at the American Bar Foundation.
In 2004, Steven was awarded the John Bates Clark Medal, which is given to the most influential economists under the age of 40. In 2006, he was named one of Time Magazine’s ‘100 People Who Shape Our World’. He is also the co-author of ‘Superfreakonomics’, ‘Think Like a Freak’, and ‘When to Rob a Bank’, the subsequent sequels to his first book, all of which were widely acclaimed and sparked insightful conversations amongst readers. Steven has published over 60 academic publications, including the controversial co-authored ‘The Impact of Legalised Abortion on Crime’.
As a board member of the Blueprint Schools Network, Steven centers his studies on education, corruption, and crime through the lens of economics. He is often invited to speak on the growing impact of behavioural economics, debates over public policy, and cultural fascination with data. Steven is the co-author of the Freakonomics blog and the podcast co-host of People I (Mostly Admire, as well as a popular guest on other podcast shows. Steven’s first TED talk, ‘The Freakonomics of McDonald's vs Drugs’, dives into whether drug-dealing is a truly lucrative venture, further demonstrating his unconventional yet wholly fascinating perspective on economics.
