He has also gone on to play for the England National Team earning 42 caps for England, participating in the major tournaments of the 1980 UEFA European Championship and the 1982 FIFA World Cup. However, Steve’s journey with England was cut short after sustaining an injury while playing in a 1982 European Championship qualifier against Hungary. The injury involved severe damage to the cartilage and ligaments in his right knee. Steve was forced to retire after an incredible career in professional football playing for Tranmere Rovers and Manchester United. Steve then went on to transition into management after retiring from playing football. His managerial career began in 1984 when he was appointed as Crystal Palace Manager at the age of 28. Steve took the team to the 1990 FA Cup Final. Steve then went on to manage Brentford, Brighton & Hove Albion, and Reading. In his later career Steve explored new opportunities by managing in India’s burgeoning football league. He became known for his tactical acumen and ability to get the best out of limited resources and has been celebrated for his achievements, particularly in for his record-breaking success at Reading. His ability to overachieve with smaller teams has earnt him huge respect among fans.
