Former Great British Bake Off winner in 2017, Sophie Faldo was born in London on 31st August 1984 and grew up in Suffolk. After gaining a Bachelors degree in psychology from Manchester and then a Masters degree from Toulouse, she was selected to attend the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. She commissioned as an Officer in the Royal Artillery where she served all over the world, including Afghanistan. After leaving the Regular Army, she worked as a surveillance consultant, personal trainer and Alpine ski touring instructor before applying for The Great British Bake Off. As well as her passion for baking, Sophie also loves sports.
She has previously held National Age-group titles in both Rowing and Track Cycling. She enjoys keeping fit and has trained for the stunt register. Sophie's specialities are celebration cakes, chocolaterie and fine patisserie. She also has an interest in alternative grains, sugar-free baking and performance foods.
Since her victory on The Great British Bake Off, Sophie has gone onto complete internships at two Michelin-starred restaurants, The Glasshouse and Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons. She was also commissioned to create a huge nine-tiered cake to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the HMS Belfast. As well as working hard creating world class bakes, Sophie has also tried out banquet catering, baking desserts for 75 people at a VIP event alongside Celebrity MasterChef winner Angellica Bell. She was also honoured with a special commendation at the Women of the Future Awards and featured on the front cover of the October/November 2017 edition of the Radio Times.
Furthermore, Sophie was offered the opportunity to create her own tv show called Travel With a Goat on the world leading 4k UHD channel Insight TV. She has also featured on various tv shows such as Celebrity Eggheads, Good Morning Britain and Lorraine. In 2018, Sophie was asked to return to The Great British Bake Off tent to judge alongside Diversity’s Perri Kiely. Eventually, Sophie aims to open her own cookery in the near-future, but is currently trying to navigate the business world and develop her freelance work.
