After years of friendship, childhood pals Rachel and Ruby made the decision to share their jokes with the rest of the world in 2015. Immediately, they made an impact on the industry, with their refreshing look at taboo topics, they inspired not only laughter but others dealing with the subjects they addressed. Both members are openly gay and their experiences as queer women in a modern age are weaved throughout their sketches. Their act has been described as the perfect hybrid of a sketch show and stand up comedy there is something to get everyone roaring.
Breaking on to the scene in 2015, the duo performed at the prestigious Edinburgh Fringe Festival and featured in Funny Women and Best New Sketch Act in the same year. Welcomed to the circuit with five-star reviews, there was obviously a gap in the market perfectly filled by the quick wit and unapologetically direct comedy of Rachel and Ruby. Quickly becoming rising stars, Shelf performed at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2015, 2016, 2017 and are making their own show debut there in 2020, with ‘Straight’.
Recently, Shelf have performed at Bestival, London Pride and Bedlam Late Night, as well as being nominated for Sketchfest’s Best New Act Award. They have also been featured on BBC3, LadBible and are board members of the Alternative Comedy Memorial Society who regularly perform in London and Edinburgh. The always relevant double act have also been recognised for their musical flair that is incorporated in their stand up, with a Musical Comedy Award nomination for 2020.
