Ryan MacDonald is a speaker, former police officer and bestselling author who speaks on leadership, resilience and mental health. After more than thirty years in uniformed service across the military and policing, Ryan is best known as the #1 bestselling author of ‘Blue Lights, Dark Mind’, sharing powerful lessons on decision-making, trauma and recovery.
Ryan grew up in Dundee, Scotland, in a working-class family and faced significant challenges during his early years in education due to undiagnosed dyslexia and ADHD. Despite struggling at school, he developed resilience and determination that would shape his future career. At just seventeen, Ryan joined the Royal Air Force Police, beginning a nine-year military career that exposed him to demanding environments and international deployments. During this time he travelled widely and gained early experience of leadership, discipline and operational responsibility, including involvement in operations connected to the Iraq conflict. The experience of military service helped Ryan develop the calm judgement and personal responsibility that would later define his work in policing. After leaving the RAF, he chose to continue his commitment to public service by joining Police Scotland.
Over the next twenty-two years, Ryan built a distinguished policing career and rose through the ranks to become a Senior Police Inspector with Police Scotland. Throughout his service he worked in several specialist areas, including Counter Terrorism Policing, intelligence operations, surveillance work and major crime investigation. Ryan also served as a Critical Incident Commander, overseeing major incidents and complex investigations involving homicide, suicide and serious violence. These roles required decisive leadership, careful risk assessment and the ability to make life-changing decisions under intense pressure. Ryan’s dedication to service earned him professional commendations and respect across the policing community. However, years of exposure to traumatic situations eventually led to complex PTSD and his medical retirement from policing. Following this life-changing moment, Ryan channelled his experiences into writing and advocacy, publishing ‘Blue Lights, Dark Mind’, a #1 Amazon bestselling memoir, which offers a powerful account of trauma, survival and rebuilding life after service.
Today, Ryan is an established keynote speaker who helps organisations understand the realities of leadership, resilience and mental health in high-pressure environments. His talks resonate strongly with corporate leaders, emergency services, public sector organisations and teams navigating uncertainty or change. Ryan speaks openly about the psychological impact of frontline work, the importance of mental wellbeing and the challenge many professionals face when their identity is tied to their career. Through honest storytelling and practical insight, Ryan leaves audiences with a deeper understanding of resilience, responsibility and the kind of leadership that truly matters when the stakes are high.
