Russell Jones is a former Chief Economist and Head of FX Research senior executive. He has worked at several leading investment banks, including UBS and Lehman Brothers, as well as at ADIA and Westpac. He frequently appears on major news channels including BBC, CNBC, CNN and NHK and is regularly quoted in newspapers, including The Financial Times and The Economist. A much sought-after macroeconomist with an international purview, Russell is a compelling speaker. He presents regularly to a wide range of audiences, from financial market experts and corporates, to policymakers and the media.
Currently a partner at independent Llewellyn Consulting in the City of London, Russell advises hedge funds and other high-profile asset managers, domestic and multinational corporates, law-firms, and governments. Russell’s deep understanding of financial market dynamics, economic policy, history, and many individual economies puts him in a class of his own, enabling him to offer authoritative insights into both the shorter term conjuncture and longer-term trends.
An author of several books on economics, and an expert on the 1930s Great Depression, he is a former Managing Director and research department leader at a number of internationally-renowned financial institutions. Working on both the ‘buy’ and ‘sell-sides’ of the financial industry at different times in his career, he has been based in London, Tokyo, Sydney, and the Middle East, and has presented his views to the investment community in all four corners of the globe. With three and a half decades of experience, Russell has witnessed both the good times and the bad.
He has had first-hand experience of financial booms and busts, including the bursting of Japan’s ‘Bubble Economy’, the Asian Crisis of the late 1990s, and, of course, the Global Financial Crisis of 2008-09. He offers a real feel for what it was like to live and work through periods of acute macroeconomic trauma, and help people to recognise the warning signs of future problems. Russell has seen and done it all, and is particularly regarded for his ability to put contemporary events into longer-term perspective. His insights into what makes the world economy tick, and the likely future direction of economic policy, are impressive.
