Dr Rosa Vásquez Espinoza is a chemical biologist and conservationist, who has dedicated her career to increasing knowledge of Amazonian biodiversity and is now the Founder of Amazon Research Internacional (ARI). Of Peruvian-Andean and Amazonian descent, Rosa’s keen interest in biology began learning her grandmother’s traditional medicine practices of natural pharmaceuticals. From these early beginnings, a passion bloomed, and Rosa later achieved a BS in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Tennessee Technological University and a PhD in Chemical Biology at the University of Michigan. Alongside her studies, Rosa secured the Research and Teaching Assistant Internship at the Guang’anmen Hospital and the Lab Research and Health Campaign Coordinator Internship at Venero Cosmetic Vascular Surgery. She was also an Undergraduate Research Assistant at Tennessee Technological University, before becoming a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Michigan, discovering natural products derived from microbes in isolated parts of the world.
Rosa has had the opportunity to study all manner of microorganisms as the Founder of ARI – such as Amazonian Stingless Bees and their medicinal honey, and the genetic and chemical diversity of microbes in the Peruvian Boiling River. In addition, Rosa is also the Co-Founder of Purple Corn Creative Science, specialising in science communication, experimental design, microbial genomics and biocatalysis. Her passion for nourishing appreciation for biodiversity and her advocacy for the exploration of untapped ecosystems has earned many awards – such as the 2020 American Chemical Society CAS Leadership Award. She was also the recipient of the 2019 National Geographic Early Career Award, the 2019 Rackham International Research Award and the 2018 Dr Edgardo Laborde Graduate Student Award.
