Roland Mouret is one of the leading fashion designers in the world. Since launching his first line in 1998, he has designed some of the most desirable collections of womenswear, has won British Designer of the Year at the Elle Style Awards, and has received a number of nominations at the Lycra British Fashion Awards.
His iconic dresses, known by a single name – Galaxy, Titanium, Moon – have taken the fashion world, and the public, by storm, and have earned Mouret his reputation. A master of structure and the female silhouette, he has an intuitive understanding of women’s shapes, and his designs are loved by women all over the world – including his legion of celebrity fans.
He insists that the essence of his success is in the physicality of knowing how a person wants to undress, and while designing, he drapes fabric over the body rather than sketching his ideas. RM by Roland Mouret was launched in 2008, and he released his first menswear collection in 2010. A year later, he opened his first store at 8 Carlos Place, W1, and announced that he had secured the rights to market his designs under his own name – one of the only fashion designers in the world to have achieved this.
Recent expansion has included the perfume “Une Amourette”, the result of a collaboration with irreverent Parisian perfume house, Etat Libre d’Orange. This has ignited his passion anew. “I felt as if I was back to 20 years ago, longing to learn. Smell touches your brain, your imagination. It’s really feminine and masculine at the same time.” Distinctly feminine is the Roland Mouret maison; a beautiful store with an atelier on the premises at 8 Carlos Place, in London’s Mayfair. In addition, a lavish book, published by Rizzoli in September 2018, not only celebrates the past 21 years of design, it provides a blueprint for the future.
The brand, which is profitable, now includes eyewear, shoes, bags, accessories and bridal. The future, says its creator will involve the chance to play with the icons he has created and to push technique. The key to everything are Mouret’s craftsman’s hands, who know how to create pieces which become like a second skin, intimate and sensuous, and yet empower the wearer.
