Former three-time Champion Jockey, Richard Dunwoody became the only jockey of his generation to win the Big Three National Hunt races following wins on West Tip, Charter Party and Kribensis. By the time he retired in 1999 he had won a record 1,874 races. In 1993 he was awarded an MBE for his services to sport. Richard has won the King George VI Chases a staggering four times twice on Desert Orchid in 1989 and 1990 and then twice on One Man in 1995 and 1996. He’s impressively won the Grand Nationals twice in 1986 and 1994 on West Tip and Minnehoma. He’s been named Jump Jockey of the Year five times for his incredible achievements.
Richard is an avid charity supporter and has done an array of impressive feats in aid of charity. 2008 saw Richard and American explorer Doug Stoup reach the South Pole following a forty-eight-day trek in order to raise money for charity. This was the first time this route had been completed on foot and the first successfully completed new route to the South Pole in ten years. Only the following year was Richards’s next achievement for charity where he walked the same mile 1000 consecutive times for 1000 consecutive hours. Additionally, in 2017 Richard decided to raise money for Sarcoma UK cancer charity, by embarking on a 2,000 mile walk across Japan. This impressive trek took him 101 days starting from Cape Sata on the southern tip and ending at Cape Soya the northernmost part.
Richard makes for an extremely interesting keynote speaker as he shares his driving ambition which led to him conquering not only the horse racing world but also the South Pole. With experience succeeding in a competitive sporting environment and also extreme conditions during his charity ventures he is full of insights that can benefit everyone. From facing fear to mental resilience, Richard entertains all audiences with an extremely motivating talk. As a motivational speaker Richard covers a variety of topics he’s mastered throughout his career from how to get to the top, learning from mistakes and overcoming the fear of failure to breaking the performance barrier, controlling the controllable and building a high-performance team.
