Paul McVeigh is a Northern Irish former professional footballer, performance psychologist and international keynote speaker who helps organisations unlock world-class performance. A former Premier League footballer and Founder and CEO of The Leadership Club, Paul is also recognised as the first Premier League footballer to earn a master’s degree in psychology, combining elite sport with scientific insight.
Born in Belfast, Paul’s journey into elite sport began when he joined the youth ranks at Tottenham Hotspur. At just 17 years old he stepped into the first-team dressing room surrounded by some of the best players in the world, including Sol Campbell, Jürgen Klinsmann and Teddy Sheringham. Despite feeling overwhelmed at first, Paul quickly realised that the difference between good and world-class performers was rarely just talent. The real separator was mindset. Determined to understand what drives high performance, he committed himself to studying the psychology behind success while building his football career. Alongside his time as a professional athlete he pursued education in sport science and psychology, eventually achieving a Master’s Degree in Sport Psychology, a milestone that would later shape his entire approach to leadership and performance.
Paul went on to build a successful 16-year professional football career, playing for Tottenham Hotspur, Norwich City, Burnley and Luton Town in the English leagues. His most memorable spell came at Norwich City where he became the club’s top goalscorer during the 2002-03 season, demonstrating both consistency and resilience. Paul also played a key role in the club’s Football League First Division title-winning campaign in 2003-04, helping Norwich secure promotion to the Premier League. During his career he made over 300 professional appearances and earned 20 international caps for Northern Ireland, representing his country at senior level. Following retirement from football, Paul transitioned into media and leadership roles, becoming a BBC sports presenter, talkSPORT co-host, and BT Sport co-commentator, while also working as a Performance Psychology Coach at Crystal Palace Football Club.
Today Paul is an internationally respected speaker who translates lessons from elite sport into practical strategies for business leaders. As Founder and CEO of The Leadership Club, he works with organisations such as Microsoft, BBC, KPMG and Rolls-Royce, helping teams understand the psychology behind sustainable high performance. Paul’s keynote presentations focus on belief systems, leadership mindset, resilience and team culture, demonstrating how psychological principles shape results in both sport and business. Through powerful storytelling, academic research and real-world examples from the Premier League, Paul shows audiences how to raise standards, challenge limiting beliefs and build environments where people consistently perform at their best.
