Orville Schell is a renowned expert on geopolitical relations, particularly with China, as the Arthur Ross Director of the Center on U.S.-China Relations at the Asia Society. Having authored over 15 books throughout his career, Orville is a seasoned journalist who has worked for publications such as The New Yorker, Time Magazine, The Washington Post, China Quarterly and The New York Times.
Orville’s reputation as a specialist in China is grounded by his Master’s degree in Chinese Studies from the University of California Berkeley. Author of books such as “The China Reader: The Reform Era”, “The Tiananmen Papers”, “Discos & Democracy: China in the Throes of Reform” and “Virtual Tibet”, Orville has written more than ten of his fifteen books about China. In 2021, he published his most recent book “My Old Home: A Novel of Exile”, which tells the story of the rise of Mao Zedong in the 1940s through the 1980s.
Aside from his literary contributions, Orville returned to his alma mater as the Dean of the Graduate School of Journalism at UC Berkeley – a testament to his supreme experience in journalism. He is a Board Member of the Human Rights Watch, a Member of the Council of Foreign Relations, and often participates in the World Economic Forum. A former correspondent and consultant for several PBS Frontline documentaries, he has won an Emmy award for producing 60 Minutes’ Made in China documentary. Orville has also received the Guggenheim Fellowship, the Overseas Press Club Award, and the Harvard-Stanford Shorenstein Prize in Asian Journalism.
Orville Schell is a Fellow at the Weatherhead East Asian Institute at Columbia University as well as a Senior Fellow at the Annenberg School of Communications at USC. He has been a Jury Member for the Dan David Prize, National Magazine Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting – each exemplifying his prominence as a journalist and social commentator.
