Oritsé Williams

Oritsé Williams is a multi-platinum-selling artist, entrepreneur, advocate and keynote speaker, best known as the Founder of JLS, one of Britain’s most successful pop groups. Having helped JLS sell more than 10 million records worldwide, achieve five UK number-one singles and win two BRIT Awards and five MOBO Awards, Oritsé now translates his experiences of global success, adversity and reinvention into powerful lessons for audiences on resilience, leadership and purpose.

Born in London, Oritsé developed a strong sense of responsibility from an early age. When his mother was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, he became a young carer at just 12 years old, helping to support his family while developing his passion for music. He attended Larmenier & Sacred Heart Primary School, where he learnt to play the trumpet, as well as the British International School in Lagos and Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School. Motivated partly by a desire to create a better future for his family, Oritsé formed a group with Aston Merrygold, Marvin Humes and JB Gill, originally called UFO before becoming JLS. In 2008, they auditioned for the fifth series of ‘The X Factor’, reaching the final and finishing as runners-up. The experience provided the platform for Oritsé and his bandmates to launch an extraordinary recording career, beginning with their number-one debut single, ‘Beat Again’, in 2009.

As Founder and Member of JLS, Oritsé helped turn the group into an international success, selling more than 10 million records worldwide, achieving five UK number-one singles and completing multiple major arena tours. JLS won five MOBO Awards and two BRIT Awards, including British Breakthrough Act and British Single for ‘Beat Again’. In 2013, Oritsé demonstrated another side of his performance ability when he became the winner of ITV’s ‘Stepping Out’. He later established himself as a solo artist, songwriter and creative entrepreneur, developing a distinctive sound influenced by Afrobeats, Caribbean rhythms, R&B and soul. His wider creative work has included contributing to Zayn Malik’s 2019 track ‘Flames’. Away from music, Oritsé has become a prominent advocate for young carers and multiple sclerosis awareness, creating the Channel 4 documentary ‘Britain’s Youngest Carers’ and the BBC World Service documentary ‘Kids Who Care’. His advocacy has seen him recognised with the ‘MS Inspiration of the Year’ Award, alongside becoming the first Ambassador for the MS Trust and an official Commonwealth Ambassador for Young Carers.
