
Nita Farahany is a renowned Robinson O. Everett Professor of Law & Philosophy at Duke University, Founding Director of Duke Science & Society, and Principal Investigator of SLAP Lab. She is a top scholar on the ethical, legal, and social effects of the latest technologies, including those behind wearable “mind-reading” AI devices that use our neurological and biological information to track our brain activity. As a speaker, Nita takes audiences on a positive yet cautionary journey on what is to come with AI such as ChatGPT and neurotechnology, and how it looks to transform the way we live, learn, and work.
Nita graduated from Darmouth College in Genetics, Cell & Developmental Biology in 1998, soon moving into a Strategy Consultant role at Monitor Deloitte. In the following years, she took on Summer Associate roles for FoxKiser and Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP, before graduating with a JD in Philosophy from Duke University School of Law in 2004 and becoming a Law Clerk for Hon. Judith W Rogers. In 2005, she became a Fellow and Instructor in Law and then Associate Professor of Law and Philosophy at Vanderbilt University, and by 2006, had graduated with ALM, Concentration in Biology & Neuroscience from Harvard Extension School and an MA and PhD in Philosophy from Duke University School of Law.
In 2010, Nita was appointed Member of Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues by President Obama, informing him of ethical, philosophical, legal, and social matters in biosciences. Since 2012, she has been Robinson O. Everett Professor of Law & Philosophy at Duke University and Founding Director of Duke Science & Society. More roles include Leah Kaplan Visiting Professor in Human Rights at Stanford Law School, Board Member of International Neuroethics Society, and Commissioner at Uniform Law Commission. In 2018, she delivered a TED talk on the potential impact of neurotechnology around the world, and in 2023, published her book, The Battle for Your Brain.
Nita has received prestigious recognition over the years, including the Paul M. Bator Award, the Distinguished Teaching Award, in addition to being elected as a Member of the American Law Institute and becoming a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Through her work and talks, Nita is on a mission to show everyone how AI neurotechnology can be used for good but also emphasises the importance of safeguarding our cognitive freedom.
