Lord Nicholas Stern has enjoyed a distinguished career as an economist, politician and academic. Currently the IG Patel Professor of Economics & Government at LSE and the Chairman of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change & Environment, Nicholas is also widely honoured for his tenure as the Second Permanent Secretary of the HM Treasury and Head of the Government Economic Service. Following early appointments as a Lecturer at the University of Oxford and a Professor of Economics at the University of Warwick, Nicholas first joined LSE as the Sir John Hicks Professor of Economics in 1986. Following such roles, Nicholas was called upon by then Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown to join the UK Government, commencing his role as the Second Permanent Secretary. It was in this role that Nicholas began conducting reviews on the economics of climate change – later authoring The Stern Review, in which he referred to climate change as the largest-ever market failure. He has also served the role of Head of the India Observatory at the London School of Economics, further demonstrating his versatility.
Other prominent roles of Nicholas’ have included being the Co-Chair of the Global Commission for the Economy & Climate and the President of the British Academy. He has also been elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and the Royal Society, and has been a member of the International Advisory Council of the Center for Social & Economic Research. In addition to such roles, Nicholas has also authored countless other books, including the titles The Global Deal, A Blueprint for a Safer Planet and Why Are We Waiting? With such a distinguished career to his name, Nicholas has also been the recipient of countless awards, with his most recent award being the Bernhard Harms Prize in 2021. He has also been the recipient of the Stephen H. Schneider Award for Outstanding Climate Science Communication, the Blue Planet Prize and the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award. He has also been honoured by various educational establishments with honorary degrees – such as an Honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of Sheffield. He was also awarded Life Peerage, made Baron Stern of Brentford of Elsted in the County of West Sussex and of Wimbledon in the London Borough of Merton.
