Prior to his successful career in the industry, Neil studied Mathematics with Computer Science at University of Southampton as an undergraduate. He then went on to gain a Master’s Degree in Operational Research, where he wrote an impressive seminal research paper on Optimal Pitstop and Refuelling Strategies. The success of his MSc project led to McLaren inviting him to join them full time. His invaluable input as Team Leader guided the team through challenging periods of growth for 11 years. Neil then went on to become the Head of strategic Operations at Red Bull Racing Ltd and excelled further in his career after becoming Head of Strategy at Ferrari from 2011-15. Establishing his skillset, Neil became the Founder and Director of Random Logic Limited.
With over 30 years of experience operating in motorsports, Neil is responsible for facilitating Red Bull Racing’s first historic win at the 2009 Chinese Grand Prix with a strategy call. He also pioneered the application of the Game Theory and Monte Carlo modelling techniques to Race Strategy in 1995 for McLaren Racing. Today, over half of the Formula 1 grid uses software that has been developed by Neil or derived from his applications. He has worked with many credible names, such as Kimi Raikkonen, Mark Webber, David Coulthard, Mika Häkkinen and Fernando Alonso.
Understanding the importance of uncertainty, Neil has enlightened the field and many others with his observations. Aside from his success, Neil has undertaken projects with Southampton University, as well as working with multiple independent media and television companies, offering unique, genuine, and analytical insights.
