Naomi Metzger is a British Triple Jump Athlete who won the bronze medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham. Her journey to commonwealth glory was not an easy one, though, after being dropped by her sponsor and finding herself financially unstable, Naomi says how she nearly quit the sport she loved. Now, with confidence like never before, Naomi has been breaking her personal bests time after time. When hired as a speaker, Naomi shares her story of resilience, and how her creativity helped her improve her long jump.
At 13 years of age, Naomi signed up with the Salford Metropolitan Athletics Club and first started out as a sprinter, winning two Greater Manchester schools titles in 200 metres in both 2012 and 2013. In 2014 she then joined Trafford AC and switched to the triple jump, soon after winning the English Schools Athletics Championships. This was Naomi’s first Under-20 English title and Naomi made her international debut in 2015 at the World Youth Championships in Athletics. Throughout 2016 and 2017 Naomi won numerous Under-20 titles including the British University Championships and won a bronze medal at the 2017 European Under-20s Athletics Championships which were held in Italy. Naomi once again was very successful throughout the 2018 season with a win at both the British University Championships and the England Under-23 Championships. In 2019 Naomi narrowly missed out on the chance to represent GB at the 2019 World Athletics Championships however found she was a natural presenter as she gave the audience an athlete perspective in the BBC’s coverage of the event.
Throughout her successful career, Naomi has won an outstanding 10 British Championships in Triple Jump. The highlight of her career was no doubt when she leaped to bronze in the 2022 Commonwealth Games after nearly quitting athletics. She credits this success to joining a new team and being coached by Aston Moore – she reignited her love for athletics and was surrounded by positive people. Needing to find a way to fund her athletics costs after losing her sponsor, Naomi created AfroChicks. Her business idea is also a way of celebrating natural hair and encouraging other women to get into NFTs. Naomi also founded the athlete media platform Three.Point.Start.
In recognition of all she has achieved outside of athletics, Naomi was nominated for the Pour Moi Uplifting Awards for Innovator in Business for Afro Chicks. With there being no doubt Naomi rediscovered her mojo since joining her new team, we will once again see her standing on the podium at more international athletics events. Not only an incredible athlete but also comfortable in front of the camera as a presenter, Naomi is fast becoming a sought-after keynote speaker on the topics of positivity, creativity, technology, NFTS, mental resilience and journalism.
