Ex-Royal Marines Officer, explorer, television presenter and broadcaster Monty Halls has led a life traveling in some of the world’s most hostile environments. Running his own expedition company, Monty circumnavigated the globe four times in five years, discovered a sunken city off the coast of India and even exchanged gunfire with poachers on the Nyika Plateau.
Monty is an ex-Royal Marines Officer who worked for Nelson Mandela during the peace process in the early nineties. He left the Marines to pursue a career in expeditions, travel journalism and biology. The first stage of this was becoming qualified as a marine biologist at Plymouth University, where he achieved a First Class Honours Degree in 1999.
He funded his degree by running expeditions, the most notable of which was leading a multi-national team to the discovery of a sunken city of the Indian coast in 2002. During this period he also led four expeditions to Southern Africa, three to Malawi in order to explore the ecosystem of the lake and investigate poaching activity on the Nyika Plateau, and one to South Africa to dive looking for evidence of prehistoric settlements in cave systems off the Cape. For these expeditions, he was awarded the Bish Medal for his services to exploration by the Scientific Exploration Society.
Halls' experience of overcoming adversity led him to appear on the groundbreaking series Superhumans, Monty competed against nine other highly skilled individuals. Winning the competition, Monty’s appearance on the show initiated his media career as a highly capable TV presenter, broadcaster and writer. Monty has since presented award-winning documentaries and television series for Channel 4, National Geographic, the History Channel, Channel 5, and the BBC. He is best known for his three BBC2 series “Great escapes” where he lived on the west coast of Scotland and Ireland with his dog Reuben. He also presented the multi-award winning series “Great Barrier Reef”. He has recently finished filming a ground-breaking expedition series called Lost Worlds for the Discovery Channel. He has written seven books and is a regular contributor to magazines and newspapers.

‘’ We have worked with Monty on our last two strategy days, initially as a motivational influence and more latterly as our planner/facilitator. Monty was very quick to understand the direction we wanted to go and provided insightful guidance and judgement. Monty uses vivid examples from his experiences in both the Marines and his TV adventures that help demonstrate the need for a clear strategy and how to make this strategy become a living force in our business. His enthusiasm and passion are infectious.’’ - Tim Buckley Director Residentials, Savills
