Mike Phelan is a former professional footballer and the current assistant manager of Premier League team team, Manchester United. The Skilled midfielder easily transitioned into a coaching position once his playing days were over and has become a highly regarded speaker for club events, corporate occasions, and private hire. Spending most of his playing career at Burnley, Norwich City, and world-famous club, Manchester United, Phelan dedicated his younger days to the beautiful game. Phelan made an impact at Norwich City when he joined in 1985 when he was awarded the captaincy in his first season, and in 2002, Norwich fans voted into the club’s Hall of Fame.
Whilst at United he won the 1989 FA Cup title, 1990 European Cup and the 1992 League Cup, a trio of hugely successful seasons. Before his retirement, he earned a single cap for England. Moving into coaching after the end of his playing career, Phelan first took a position as Gary Megson’s assistant at his former club, Norwich City. This was before Phelan followed Megson to Blackpool and then Stockport County. A short while after Megson’s departure from Stockport, Phelan was hired by another former club, Manchester United. He took over as the assistant manager of the club’s reserve team, later progressing to the first-team coach.
During this time, Phelan was prevalent in BBC interviews, usually recorded for Match of the Day, as an expert in the game. After a year out of football, and a brief stint at Norwich City, Phelan was appointed as assistant manager at Hull City, under former Manchester United team-mate, Steve Bruce. In 2018 he returned to Manchester United as first-team coach, where he still hold the position today.
