A graduate of the Guildford School of Acting, Michael began his professional career in the musical ‘Godspell’, playing John the Baptist and Judas. He originated the role of Marius in ‘Les Misérables’, before creating the part of Alex in Andrew Lloyd Webber's ‘Aspects of Love’, a performance he later reprised on Broadway. Further acclaimed appearances followed in productions including ‘The Phantom of the Opera’, Stephen Sondheim's ‘Passion’ and his acclaimed solo production ‘Alone Together’ at the Donmar Warehouse. Beyond the theatre, he represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest, finishing second with the memorable song ‘One Step Out of Time’.

He has also returned to iconic productions including the 10th Anniversary Concert of ‘Les Miserables’ at the Royal Albert Hall, starred in ‘The Woman in White’, reprised his award winning role as Edna in ‘Hairspray’ at the London Coliseum, written the novels ‘The Empire’ and ‘A Backstage Betrayal’, and was appointed an OBE in recognition of his services to musical theatre.
