Maggie Alphonsi is a retired English rugby union player who is arguably the face of international women's rugby. She was a part of the England squad for 11 years between 2003 and 2014 earning 74 appearances. During her time as an English rugby player, Alphonsi was a crucial member within one of England's most successful rugby squads ever. Domestically, Alphonsi played for Saracens but she will be most recognised for her international efforts.
Alphonsi has won numerous awards due to her phenomenal career within the sport, she was named the Sunday Times Sportswoman of the Year in 2010 and was later inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame in 2016. Alphonsi was an integral part of England's record-breaking squad that won seven consecutive Six Nations Championships and also the World Cup winning squad in 2014. After the World Cup, she was named in the BBC's Sports Personality Team of the Year. Having won nearly every competition possible, Alphonsi retired from rugby just after the 2014 World Cup. She retired as England's most successful rugby player of all time and has built an exceptional legacy for other women within rugby to build on.
Since retiring, Alphonsi has spent time as a commentator on live rugby matches for both Sky Sports and BBC. When she was signed by ITV in 2015, she became the first ever former female player to commentate on men's international rugby. Alphonsi was signed for the World Cup coverage and has since commentated on the Six Nations too.
Her knowledge on the sport is second-to-none so when coupled with her exceptional presenting skills, Alphonsi makes for one of the best commentators on the panel. She has become an inspirational figure within a sport dominated by males, her ability to inspire is reflected throughout her time as a rugby speaker.
