Lucy Shuker is an inspiration to the world of tennis. Currently the highest ranked woman in the sport in Britain, she’s a singles and doubles National Champion who has never once let tragedy stop her from pursuing greatness. Able to uplift any audience with her tales of overcoming adversity, she’s an athlete and speaker who specialises in fuelling the flame within aspiring disabled sportspeople. Lucy is not only the first woman to win a medal for Great Britain in wheelchair tennis, but she’s also a two-time paralympic bronze medallist whose success has been hard-earned and well-deserved.
Though tennis is where Lucy found her calling, she actually came from a family of badminton players. Her and her brother would represent Hampshire Country as national competitors, and she even dabbled in horse-riding during her early life. However, when she was 21, Lucy was involved in a tragic motorbike accident that left her paralysed from the T4 vertebra. Though this awful event flipped her life upside down, Lucy refused to let it stop her from living. So, not even 12 months after her accident, she began playing wheelchair tennis. Inspired by former Quad World #1 Pete Norfolk, she embarked on a new journey that would mould her into the outstanding woman she is today.
Since 2002, Lucy has represented Great Britain at four successive Paralympic Games, with London 2012 being one of her most successful career moments to date. Here, Lucy and her teammate Jordanne Whiley became the very first women to win a medal for Great Britain in wheelchair tennis. This bronze medal win would mark a pivotal point in Paralympic history, and the pair were able to retain their success four years later at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. In addition to becoming the first British wheelchair tennis player to participate in all major Tennis Grand Slams, reaching the semi-finals of the woman’s wheelchair doubles in the Australian Open, and playing in the Wimbledon doubles finals, Lucy has a wealth of fascinating experiences to share with audiences.
Focusing her talks on adapting to huge life changes and making the most of a bad situation, Lucy is a motivational speaker who strongly encourages disabled listeners to pursue their passions, regardless of their mobility. Her presentations are designed to amaze and inspire, and audiences are sure to leave with a new perspective on what they’re capable of achieving. If you’re looking to empower the atmosphere of your event with tales of perseverance and resilience, hire Lucy Shuker today!
