
Sir John Hegarty is a creative leader who pioneers the way for a change in how creativity is taught. He has been fundamental to global advertising for over six decades, sharing his knowledge. As the former Advertising Executive and the founder of the agency Bartle Bogle Hegarty and co-founder of The Garage Soho and The Business of Creativity, he engages his audience in the importance of creativity for marketing.
John began his career as a Junior Art Director at Benton and Bowles after attaining his passion for art and design at the London College of Printing. Following this, in 1967, he joined Saatchi & Saatchi, where he became a founding shareholder and used his creativity to develop the business's reputation. In 1973, John left the business and co-founded the London Office of TBWA, where he pioneered the philosophy to challenge advertising conventions. The agency's creative breakthrough was soon recognised as it was named Campaign’s UK Agency of the Year. In 2014, John co-founded The Garage Soho, an early-stage brand investor and builder, where he offered support in companies' brand strategy and creative media. In 2022, John also co-founded the Business of Creativity, where he became the Creative Director to share his passion for unlocking others’ creative potential.
During his career, John has published two books sharing his insightful view on creative thinking when it comes to advertising. His book, published in 2014, “Hegarty on Creativity: There are No Rules”, encourages readers to trust their instincts when it comes to original creative ideas. His inspiring career has not gone unnoticed, as in 2007 he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth || for his services to the advertising and creative industries. In 1994, he was awarded the D&AD President’s Award for his outstanding contributions. Additionally, John was inducted into the ADC’s and New York One Club’s Hall of Fame, along with being the first to receive the prestigious Lion of St. Mark Award.
