Former Major League Baseball pitcher and motivational speaker, Jim Morris, regularly blows audiences away with his incredible story. Famed for playing with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, his fast throw and determined nature set Jim apart on the pitch. Now, such perseverance also sets him apart on the speaking circuit, as he inspires audiences with his winning mindset. At events, this storyteller’s message is clear – here is how I achieved my dreams, and what you can do to achieve yours – a sentiment also explored through his books, The Oldest Rookie and The Rookie.
Following a High School career in American Football, Jim was selected for the New York Yankees baseball draft in 1982. He later moved to the Milwaukee Brewers, before signing with the Chicago White Sox. From 1989, Jim played with the prestigious team, strengthening his form until he retired in 1999. Jim was plagued with injuries, leading to his retirement - but he still found joy coaching the Reagan County Owls for over a decade.
As a coach, Jim made a bet that would set his life on a new path; if the team won the District Championship, he would try-out for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Under Jim’s leadership, the team won, and Jim held up his side of the bargain. Aged 35, he signed a professional contract with the team. As Jim could throw 12 consecutive fastballs at an eye-watering 98-mph, a defining skill that reignited his career, he was picked to play for the Los Angeles Dodgers. A testament to his incredible achievements, Jim’s story was the subject of Sports Illustrated magazine’s Five Greatest Baseball Films of the Year.
With such an incredible story, it is no surprise that Jim’s life was immortalised in the 2002 biographical film, The Rookie, which won an ESPY for Sports Film of the Year. As a motivational speaker, he delves even deeper into his unique experience of fame, failure, and subsequent success. Audiences are inspired by his determination, which leaves guests with a new perspective of achieving your dreams. Jim leaves audiences with a simple question; if I can do it, why can’t you? A sentiment that drives mental resilience and self-belief at events.
