Former cricketer turned coach, Jason Gillespie is previously known to play as a right-hand fast bowler and also a low-order batsman for teams including Yorkshire and the Australian national team. Now the head coach at Sussex County Cricket Club, Jason has proven himself as an immensely talented player and is now passing on his knowledge as a mentor of one of England’s most prolific squads. Acknowledged as the first Aboriginal person to become a Test cricketer, Jason made his first Australian domestic century at a Pura Cup match in the 2007/08 season against Tasmania. He later scored his first domestic first-class century in a County Championship match against Surrey where he set a record score of 123 not out for a Yorkshire number 10 batsman.
Internationally, Jason has established himself as Australia’s sixth-highest wicket-taker having taken 258 wickets in only 71 Tests. He continued to display his undeniable skill at the 2005/06 Pura Cup when he became the fourth-highest wicket-taker in the competition before being named man of the series in his final series for Australia. Also a highly regarded batter, Gillespie has the record for the highest individual score set by a night watchman and is also the only watchman to have scored a double century in an inning of a Test in which earned him man of the match.
Since his retirement from the game, Jason has delved into a career in coaching. He began mentoring Zimbabwe in 2010 before being named the bowling coach of Indian Premier League team Kings XI Punjab in 2011. He also boasts time as the first-team coach of Yorkshire, coach of the Adelaide Strikers and the interim head coach for the Papua New Guinea national team. Most recently, Jason has become the head coach of Sussex County Cricket Club. He has also gone onto become an incredibly in-demand sports speaker who is known for covering topics including effective teamwork and leadership as well as achieving peak performance and retaining determination.
