Jamie Staff is a former World BMX Champion and Olympic Gold Medallist in the Team Sprint at the Beijing Games. Jamie is also the Director of BMX for USA Cycling. As a speaker Jamie talks about what it takes to reach the very highest level of two sports, discussing the versatility and adaptability he had to call on throughout his career. Engaging and passionate about what he talks about Jamie is a great choice for an Olympic speaker to inspire an audience.
He started his competitive career in BMX racing after taking up the sport aged nine. In 1996 he won the BMX World Championship and had won just about everything else below that level as well including winning NBL Pro events. After his World Championship win, Jamie set his sights on an Olympic medal but as BMX was not an Olympic sport at the time, he transferred to track cycling. A natural competitor he showed his versatility and qualified for the GB cycling team at the first attempt.
Not hanging about he won bronze and silver at the Commonwealth games before helping Team GB win Gold in the Team Sprint at the World Championships in 2002. The following year he won Kilometre and Team Sprint Gold in World Cup events. His success continued as he was World Champion in Keirin at the start of 2004 before he was named in the squad for the 2004 Olympics but unfortunately did not medal at the games. He bounced back from the Olympics with Team Sprint Gold at the 2005 World Championships. After a succession of silver and bronze medals at major championships Jamie was again selected for Olympics, this time in Beijing. He competed in the Team Sprint alongside Sir Chris Hoy and Jason Kenny and the trio broke the world record on the way to winning an Olympic gold medal. His Olympic success saw him awarded an MBE and after one last World Championship silver medal, he retired from the sport in 2010. He is still involved in cycling though, working as Director of BMX for USA Cycling and oversaw the team’s gold and silver medals at the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
Available to book as a speaker, Jamie Staff draws on his experiences to discuss what it takes to reach the very top and compete against the best from around the world. Engaging and inspiring, audiences will love to hear stories from Jamie Staff’s 30+ year career amongst the world’s cycling elite.
